In an era of increasing cultural diversity in schools, educators face the challenge of providing equitable and effective education to students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. This challenge is particularly pronounced in high schools with a significant population of students new to the U.S. who are English language learners. In this sesson, I will share insights and reflections from my experience teaching newcomer students in a small high-minority Spanish-speaking high school. Specifically, I discuss how incorporating project-based financial literacy education has proved to be a successful approach in supporting the academic growth and language acquisition of newcomer students in mathematics.
