The STEM Summit provides professional learning opportunities for teachers and educational staff members in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics taught by experts and specialists in their fields.

Module Design for Infectious Disease Surveillance in the High School Science Classroom

We are interested in supporting the development of curriculum in WA state high schools related to environmental surveillance of infectious diseases. In a preliminary study we surveyed 29 high school teachers in Washington State regarding how and if they teach about antimicrobial resistance. The survey evaluated their personal knowledge, current teaching practices, and interest in teaching about AMR. The majority of surveyed instructors teach AMR in biology in the context of evolution. One of the main skills teachers identified as of interest in an AMR module was reading scientific literature. Based on this survey and interviews with teachers and other key stakeholders, we developed a set of four independent modules designed to support teachers introducing AMR into high school curriculums. These modules include information about AMR and a One Health approach to understanding AMR. They are designed to stand alone or supplement other activities around AMR and related topics. We are also interested in supporting instructors on hands-on activities related to environmental detection of antimicrobial resistance and pathogens.
