Module Design for Infectious Disease Surveillance in the High School Science Classroom
Monday August 19, 2024 11:00am - 11:50am PDT
We are interested in supporting the development of curriculum in WA state high schools related to environmental surveillance of infectious diseases. In a preliminary study we surveyed 29 high school teachers in Washington State regarding how and if they teach about antimicrobial resistance. The survey evaluated their personal knowledge, current teaching practices, and interest in teaching about AMR. The majority of surveyed instructors teach AMR in biology in the context of evolution. One of the main skills teachers identified as of interest in an AMR module was reading scientific literature. Based on this survey and interviews with teachers and other key stakeholders, we developed a set of four independent modules designed to support teachers introducing AMR into high school curriculums. These modules include information about AMR and a One Health approach to understanding AMR. They are designed to stand alone or supplement other activities around AMR and related topics. We are also interested in supporting instructors on hands-on activities related to environmental detection of antimicrobial resistance and pathogens.

Project Based Finacial Literacy Curriculum
Monday August 19, 2024 1:00pm - 1:50pm PDT
In an era of increasing cultural diversity in schools, educators face the challenge of providing equitable and effective education to students from diverse linguistic backgrounds. This challenge is particularly pronounced in high schools with a significant population of students new to the U.S. who are English language learners. In this sesson, I will share insights and reflections from my experience teaching newcomer students in a small high-minority Spanish-speaking high school. Specifically, I discuss how incorporating project-based financial literacy education has proved to be a successful approach in supporting the academic growth and language acquisition of newcomer students in mathematics.

This session is my attempt to bring a slice of ISTE back to you; all the coolest stuff I came across over 4 ridiculously jampacked days, distilled into a tight 60 minutes. This should hopefully be a good way to round off your STEM summit experience; leave feeling inspired, awed, and empowered!

Harnessing AI to Design Equitable Learning Experiences
Tuesday August 20, 2024 8:00am - 9:30am PDT
Educators teach beautifully diverse groups of students with various skill levels, needs, language proficiencies, and learning preferences. Too often, this diversity is seen as problematic or a challenge to be overcome. Before AI, designing for this diversity and learner variability was an arduous, time consuming process that felt unsustainable. AI simplifies this design work, alleviating the pressure on teachers to spend hours designing lessons and providing feedback. Educators using AI should view it as a powerful thought partner, inspiring purposeful and creative design that strives to remove barriers, create flexible pathways, and free teachers to work directly with learners. AI should elevate the teaching profession and amplify the teacher’s impact in classrooms.

It's impossible to meet the needs of diverse learners if you move lockstep through curriculum and activities as a whole class. Explore how the Station Rotation Model can help you create more opportunities to work directly with small groups of students, individualize scaffolding and support, differentiate instruction, move feedback into the classroom, and allow students to control the pace of their learning. During this hands-on, practice-based session, Catlin Tucker will highlight strategies for designing dynamic lessons, provide tips for making the most of your teacher-led station, review grouping strategies, and encourage you to move feedback and assessment into the classroom.

Shift Writing (Across the Curriculum) into Your Classroom with UDL and Blended Learning
Tuesday August 20, 2024 1:00pm - 3:30pm PDT
Writing is not relegated to English class.  Students in almost every subject area benefit from processing and sharing their learning in writing. Unfortunately, the majority of the writing students do takes place outside of class in the form of homework. Yet, there is significant value in shifting the writing process into the classroom, where teachers can guide the experience and provide support. In a classroom setting, teachers provide explicit instruction on writing techniques and strategies, such as brainstorming, prewriting, and revising. They can also give students individualized feedback on their writing, helping them to identify areas for improvement and encouraging them to take ownership of their learning. Additionally, the classroom provides a supportive and collaborative environment for students to share their writing with their peers and receive feedback from classmates. This workshop will combine UDL principles and blended learning strategies to help teachers move writing into the classroom, ensuring students feel supported as they write and submit authentic writing.

Washington’s Future Depends on (STEM) Teachers
Wednesday August 21, 2024 8:00am - 9:30am PDT
With more than 70% of Washington state’s household-sustaining wage jobs requiring a STEM degree or STEM literacy along with recent research showing how students rely on teachers for postsecondary preparation and STEM identity, we must pay more attention to teacher pathways and the STEM teaching workforce in particular. Using large-scale data, researchers from the University of Washington, with support from Washington STEM, have started to understand the last few years’ large-scale exodus of teachers from the profession. In this keynote, we will dive into workforce data, teacher turnover data, and understand the inextricable link between our state’s future and the health and wellness of educators and their pathways.
